JSP 13. Christians and Christianity, Vol I. Corpus of Christian Sites in Samaria and Northern Judea; JSP 14. Christians and Christianity, Vol II. Corpus of Christian Sites in Judea

14. (vols. 13 and 14 must be sold as a set). A corpus of Christian sites discovered in surveys and excavations conducted from the 19th century to the present. In the period preceding Christianity, Judea differed from Samaria in its population and hisorical development. The former was sparsely populated, mainly by pagans and Idumeans, allowing the penetration of Christianity. Christian penetration in Samaria was accompanied by Samaritan revolts. Most of the churches established in the area around Jerusalem, in the Judean Desert and in the Hebron Hills belonged to monasteries, the majority of which were built in Roman fortresses erected in the late fourth to early fifth century CE.
