In antiquity, Hammat Gader was located on an important thoroughfare linking the major settlements of Provincia Palaestina with Bostra, capital of Provincia Arabia. The natural springs of Hammat Gader, each with a different temperature and mineral content, gave rise to a large complex of elaborate bathing halls, renowned throughout the ancient world for their curative powers. The baths were systematically excavated between 1979 and 1982 by Y. Hirschfeld and G. Solar. Major architectural remains and other finds uncovered are reported and interpreted here.
