From 1969 to 1982 extensive archaeological excavations were conducted in the Jewish Quarter of the Old City of Jerusalem under the direction of the late Professor Nahman Avigad. During these excavations various construction remains were found, as well as numerous vessels and artifacts from all periods of settlement, which extend from the late First Temple period through the Ottoman period.

Among the major archaeological discoveries are portions of fortifications, including the Broad Wall of the late First Temple period and the First Wall of the late Second Temple period; residences of the Upper City of Jerusalem dated to the late Second Temple period, including the Burnt House and the Palatial Mansion; the Cardo and the Nea Church of the Byzantine period; a covered bazaar dated to the Crusader period; and portions of the southern fortifications of the Islamic-period city. These and other finds have changed many long-accepted ideas regarding the lengthy history of the Southwestern Hill (part of which is today’s Jewish Quarter) as well as the size and urban topography of ancient Jerusalem.

This is the tenth volume in the final reports series of the excavations conducted in the Jewish Quarter. It presents the remains of the Peristyle House (excavation Area M). The remains are part of a large, luxurious, private dwelling, its walls lavishly adorned with multicolor frescos and tiled floors in opus sectile style. It contained a courtyard surrounded by colonnades (peristyle), various rooms and several miqwaʾot (Jewish ritual baths). The house was built in the 1st century CE and abandoned shortly before the sack of Jerusalem by the Romans in 70 CE.

Volume X presents the architectural remains of the Peristyle House and many small finds including pottery, stone vessels, coins and glass items, as well as various unique objects of bronze and two carved and inscribed bone discs.
