Christians and Christianity, Vol. V. Monastery of Martyrius

The Monastery of Martyrius was excavated in the early 1980s. It was founded as a Roman military structure at the end of the 4th-beginning of the 5th century CE and was established as a monastery by the monk Martyrius in the second half of the 5th century CE. It appears to have been abandoned during the Persian conquest or following the Arab conquest of 638 CE.
